Mosquito Ringtone - Both National Public Radio (NPR) and the New York Times have reported on the latest idea for teenagers to get one over on adults. It is a high pitched tone that most adults cannot hear but young people can plainly discern. When installed as a ringtone on a cellphone, it allows kids in classrooms to get notification of calls or text messages without their teachers hearing the ring of the cell phone. Clever, eh?
Part of the natural process of aging is hearing loss, and it occurs first in the high frequency response of the ear. The Mosquito Ringtone is a 17kHz (17000 cycles per second) tone that is above the range of hearing of many adults, though you should be aware that some oldsters will still be able to hear it.
It is interesting to note that the tone was first developed by a British company as a means to repel young people from loitering in public retail areas but without irritating adults who might be there as customers.
The free ringtones offered on this page are different than the simple 9 second tone available for download on other sites. Our Teen Ringer was generated specifically for release here and has been carefully engineered to have high output, and no clicks or pops that could damage speakers or headphones. Accept no imitations.
